Um, for some reason I had thought there was a thread in here about the new movie...but I couldn't find it using tribe search...so gave up trying. Saw it--it was definitely good. If your coterie has not seen it yet, be advised to stick around for the credits! Definitely a good geek date movie as you can discuss how unrealistic it is yet how it is still cool anyways!

Why Geeks Make Better Lovers

This is from last week, but I only just stumbled across it: http://www.wired.com/culture/lifestyle/commentary/sexdrive/2007/04/sexdrive_0406/

These are just the highlights (click the link):

Geeks build it so you will come
Geeks get personal with tech
Geeks dig consensual role playing
Geeks interact
Geeks get things done
Geeks are hot …
… and wear the coolest glasses.
Geeks don't shock easily
Geeks know kinky people
Geeks understand multi-dimensional relationships
Geeks connect with their online buddies in several guises, often getting to know the person behind the avatar as friendships deepen and move from adult communities to personal IM.
Geeks aren't threatened by new tech or "the future of sex"

Submit your own reason why geeks are better lovers and I'll tell you some of mine, too.

if someone wanted to set up a conference call for as cheap as possible how would they do that? it might include a couple of people in canada so long distance might be an issue, where as between unlimited long distance and cell phones it usually wouldn'tbe to much.

someone has suggested skype and I'm wondering if anyone knows how difficult that would be to set up(not skype I have skype on my desk top, but the call it's self) and if it's possible to get some people on the line and then call a last person? Apparently some of the ways to do conference calls everyone has to call into a number and type in a code. that wouldn't work for surprises.

I know I should be able to figure this stuff out generally but I can't seem to get my brain to focus enough and I'm running out of time.

I am looking at switching the content of my company's website over to a new provider. I would like to get some recommendations of companies to contact for this. Right now it's a static content with an Xcart program. The future, holds no bars though. We would like to move the content before year end and upgrade it all starting Q1.

Please email me in here or respond to this post with ideas. I contacted RackSpace but they want $450 per month for their services and was looking at something not so robust. I don't need a dedicated server yet, a shared one would suffice.

It occured to me recently that the guys I am attracted to since my divorce have been brilliant in the smart area(and often in some creative area...other areas...well not so much:o) but I was wondering how important is "smart" in how attracted you are to people? How connected to "geek" is "smart" in your mind?
used to be that if you played video games, you were a geek.
understanding a/v equiptment...
collecting stamps...
buying shit online...
talking online daily...
having super-high standards for dating...
these and alot of ohter things pretty much describe us all, so what's the point of society ostracising us anymore?

(after typing this, i realize it was pretty ranty, but i really am interested in feedback)

hello there! I prolly should post to a photoshop tribe but here goes...

I imported some RAW images from a Canon EOS rebel. The images were taken in RAW format. And iPhoto opened up and did its thing. So far, so good. Not so much. Because when I started up Photoshop CS2 to convert them to b/w, photoshop wouldn't open them. I can't convert them in the camera to jpeg cause the camera is not mine....any suggestion as to how I can open them to edit in Photoshop??

thanks in advance....

Ten Reasons Why You Should Date a Geek

1) He can fix your computer. There I said it. Do you really need another reason? He is not a bum. He has useful skills that can make your life (at least the part that is spent on the computer, and let’s face it, that is where we all spent most of our time any way) run smooth. Not enough? OK, here’s number two.

2) He has friends who can fix your computer. So now you are in a relationship and he knows he’s got you and doesn’t feel like he needs to jump every time you call. All of a sudden he is too busy for you? He has work to do and can’t get there fast enough? No problem. Call one of his buddies. They’d love to help out. Geeks are the most helpful friends you’d ever make.

3) Not a computer person? OK, here’s the killer. He can also hook up the TV, connect the DVD player and Tivo your favorite programs. He’ll also hook you up with the sweetest sound system you’ve ever heard. It would be like angels singing to you.

4) Looking further for another reason? Yes, you guessed it. He has friends who can hook up the TV, connect the DVD player, etc. etc. etc.

5) And it gets better: Not only can he fix your computer and DVD player, he can do the same for your friends. All of a sudden your social life will pick up. Your phone won’t stop ringing. Dinner invitations come up every night of the week. You’d be as popular as if you owned a truck and you don’t even have to help anyone move.

6) Sigh…you really want more reasons to date a geek? Fine. Here’s one for your vanity. He’ll make you shine every where you go. No matter how clumsy your sense of style, no matter how awkward your social skills, you’ll be a fashion star and a classy diplomat next to your geek. He’ll make you look so good; you’ll fall in love with yourself.

7) So you are not into computers, TVs and DVDs and you don’t care about being popular and fashionable. What about the newest techie gadgets? Do you like cell. phones, digital cameras, camcorders, or MP3 players? Forget bling bling. Let me tell you girlfriend, you are going to be a proud owner of the latest gadgets if you ever decide to date a geek. Your cell. phone will not only have your best friends’ number on speed dial, it would also be able to take pictures, make movies and even do your nails. Your sleek, sexy, and very small digital camera will take pictures that will put Ansel Adams to shame and your brand new, top of the line MP3 player will make all the heads turn your way.

8) Not satisfied yet? Ok, I hear you. You are saying gadgets and toys are fun, but they won’t keep me warm in the middle of the night, if you know what I mean. Well, I didn’t think I would have to tell you this, but I guess you are going to make me spell it out for you. Here’s the deal, sweet and simple: Your geek will worship the ground you walk on. He’ll be so happy that a pretty girl like you paid attention to him that he’ll be at your feet. He’ll adore you as if you were his queen. In his arms, you’ll feel like you are at the top of the world. Believe me, I know what I am talking about.

9) I know I got your attention now, but wait it gets better. He won’t cheat on you either. You don’t believe me? Here’s a test. Place the sexiest woman on earth in a room with a geek, say Angelina Jolie in a Victoria Secret sexy lingerie. At the other corner of the room, place the latest model of some computer or other. I am willing to bet my bottom dollar that your geek would want to play with that computer much more than getting to know Angelina Jolie. In fact, he might not even see her if the computer is on and connected to the Internet. C’mmon he has to check his email, surf the web and blog about the fact that he is in a room with Angelina Jolie ;)

10) Ok, reason number ten. Did I mention he can fix your computer???

Camcorder help.

Every year around Tax return time I decide to purchase a camcorder. Every year I hold out because I cannot find the features I want in the price range I want. This year I have decided to spend the extra money to buy something nice. And I REALLY want to buy it this time!! I have been looking at the Panasonic PV-GS250.

http://www.dvspot.com/reviews/panasonic/pv_gs250-review/index.shtml

The look and feel of it is great and it has the features I want. I'm not so concerned about taking stills as I have a great digital camera already, but mostly would like the edit and tweak abilities. I like the Mini DV technology, and the 3 CCD's on this one, though I'd be happy with one big CCD. The only concern I have with this camera is in low light it's grainy and noisy. I plan to shoot a lot indoor as well as outdoors and really need to have good quality low lighting.

My question is, does anyone know if I add a a light to the accessory shoe if that would help enough to cut out the noise and bad picture or is there a camcorder that has similar features or of similar quality and has better low light?

I was looking at the Sony DCR-HC90 which does great low lighting, but it doesn't seem as nice of a camcorder and it's almost just as expensive!

Can anyone help me??

Thanks :D

We're all geeks in here, and surely, we have a lot to say about the changes (graphically speaking) that have happened to Tribe....not to mention the recent onslaught of spam. I tried logging on this am and Tribe was "forcing me" to log in to a tribe called hooker. Like I really need to do that.

Anyway, I'm sure that there are other tribes dedicated to the 'redesign' whining, but I wanted to hear from you all:

* what is your major disappointment about the new Tribe look

* what, if any, changes are to your liking

I'm doing this completely out of curiosity and because I like to look at things that are pretty...and recently, Tribe, ain't one of them. I think your responses will also serve as an additional reason to stay or to go. So far, two friends have left Tribe permanently....will there be more?

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=29161

This is an intresting point of view on DRM. I know how much geeks like DRM.

DRM is a complete lie

DRM IS A LIE. When an agenda driven DRM infection peddler gets on a soapbox and blathers about how it is necessary to protect the BMW payments of a producer who leeches off the talented, rest assured, they are lying to you. DRM has absolutely nothing to do with protecting content, it is about protecting the wallets of major corporations. The funny thing is they aren't protecting it from you, they are protecting it from each other.
Let's look at the shattering success of every DRM solution to date. Every single one has failed. The score card is hundreds if not thousands against, zero for. Name me one song, movie or software title that is DRM infected that has not found it's way to the net within a week of release, usually long before release. There are none. To protect content, DRM is an abject and total failure, and will continue to be.

It also hurts the user - there is no DRM infection that in any way benefits the consumer. It costs more to develop, costs to license, makes hardware more expensive and complex, and screws the user under legitimate uses. It has a negative value to the consumer.

So, it makes content less attractive, less playable, and is legally dubious, so why is the industry hell bent on infecting everything from your prophylactics to your computers? Simple, they want a bigger slice of the pie, and DRM is the way to get it. No, not bigger profit margins, the greedy bastards already do that with each format change, DRM infections are about edging each other out.

Here is the problem, every DRM infection is unique, patented, copyrighted, copywronged, and DMCAd ad nauseum, They protect their code in every way possible, and make it so you have to get their approval to use it. This is all done under the guise of protecting content, but that is a lie. If you are going to steal content, do you think violating another copyright on the DRM mechanism will make you lose more sleep? Not a chance.

If you are a rival company though, you can't really violate such things and get away with it for long, Sony, MS and most people swiping GPLd code are proof of that. So, you have to license it to play ball, or at least play music and movies. That is the true nature of DRM infections, to keep other big greedy companies out.

So, say you are a big immoral record company that see walking wallets, aka customers, as not giving you enough of their hard earned money, some have the gall to buy from other big greedy immoral companies. Bastards! What do you do? Make sure they have a hard time playing things from the other guys.

Let's take a good example of this, the first few generations of Sony's DRM infected failures of an almost MP3 player. Sony decided that its proprietary ATRAC format was better than MP3, and technically it could be, but that is irrelevant. They didn't support MP3s out of the box, but would do a one way conversion if you wanted to put your MP3s on the Walkman. Taking them off was a bit curious though.

Also, if you wanted to buy music, you could go to the wonderful (sarcasm people, sarcasm) Sony connect store, and buy almost anything that Sony licensed artists made. If you wanted a song by a Warner artist, well, tough. Stepping into the land of make believe for a minute, imagine that Time-Warner made digital music players, and lets pretend they have an encoding system and DRM infection called HURT-SCAM. You can buy a TW player and download any HURT-SCAM song, curiously this meant only titles from a Warner artist. If you have a Sony player, it doesn't support HURT-SCAM, and TW players don't support ATRAC.

Now, if this hypothetical TW player wanted to play ATRAC, they could reverse engineer it, and get bitten by the same DMCA laws they bought so many Congresspeople to implement, and the same is true for Sony wanting to implement HURT-SCAM. (Please note, I am not intoning that these companies buy government, remember this is make believe. The US governmental system is immune to such things, just ask them.). Basically, both sides have to license their bitter rivals before they can interoperate.

Now, lets step back into the land of reality. You have ATRAC, FairPlay (har har), Real, WMA, and a host of other DRM infections, and none can play any of the others. If you have a player that can do one, chances are that it can't do any of the others, almost like the license terms preclude it, but it would take someone much more cynical than I to say that. You have enough walled gardens to last a lifetime, and each one is filled with greedy execs trying to wrap their mind around how much money this will bring them. The stakes are high, they each want it all, and want all the others to go away, there is no middle ground.

The enforcement mechanism is quite simply the DRM infection Without DRM, the other guys could invade their garden and do thing that might benefit the user, I mean take away the profits they feel are rightfully theirs. In the mean time every piece of media thus 'protected' is available for download. DRM has done, is doing and will do nothing to stop piracy.

Basically, you and I are the innocent bystanders in this drive by shooting called DRM. The big companies are at war, and we are the casualties. So, they have to send their flying monkeys to sue single moms, 12 year olds and octogenarians to make it appear that they are doing what they say. Bull, they are lying. The sad part is that the public, and worse yet, the governments are listening to them.

The misinformation campaign seems to have sunk in, people don't even question that DRM is about protecting content any more, even though it has never done so. It hurts the users, and hurts the companies making it, but they have their eyes on the big prize. DRM infections are the only way to keep their rivals at bay, lobbing a few bullets at the users is a low price to pay for that. µ

I don't understand the photo of a tattoo of what I think is 4 binary numbers:
        01000010
        01100100
        01101110
        01100100
which is 66, 100, 110, 100.
Maybe it's "Bdnd" - using ASCII.
But what does that mean?
A reference to Dungeons and Dragons?

I assume the person who uploaded the image knows what it's about, thanks.

Where'd everybody go?

Anyway, a question. My official, legal name change is done next week and I'm thinking about commemorating it with a tattoo. I was thinking maybe my new name in ASCII binary code (8 bit) on my left shoulder blade. So, is it too geeky? Will it read? What do my fellow geeks think?

So I have this fantastic 180 GB hard drive....I have about 60 GB left. I transferred my iTunes library on it. The problem, recently, has become that it "spins down" and my tunes disappear. Any suggestions?

Other details: Powerbook G4/OS 10.3/3 GB HD

Jeez, I seem to be really geeky lately! I keep starting new threads.

Anyway, I just realized I still have a bunch of old computer stuff. A VIC-20, a Commodore 64, Amiga 500 and 2000, and an Atari 2600 that's still set up and sits on top of my PS2.

Anyone else still have old stuff around that they just can't get rid of?

My cell phone has not been the same sence my dog spilled my extra sugary mocha all over it. I have been looking to get a new once since I came into a little bit of money with sales being up this summer at work. I used to have a pda phone and had some problems with it, but I really miss having one. My carrier is sprint and I was hoping to gain some perspective from all the super smart peeps in here! Basically what I want is to be able to access word, email, websites (tribe hopefully), yahoo messenger and easy texted messaging. The phone I have now is horrible for txted messaging. I was wondering what you guys thought of this phone? It's on sale on ebay recondition for about $100 or so.

http://www.sprint.com/pcsbusiness/devices/pda/hitachig1000.html#features

It's a little big for my tastes but I cannot afford a smaller version. Now the PCC-6600 is out and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that phone, but uh...yea! So cannot afford it!

I got a project for you if anyone wanted to help me out a little bit.

I went through and took a look at the tribe 25 and found some interesting things. Here is the raw data, I would love to have it made into some telling statistics.

All those numbers are making my brain hurt. But I can tell you that Not one single one of the bay area tribe 25(I will do this for the non bay area members of the national tribe 25 later tonight I think) has a mature profile. I listed any mature tribes they were in under the number of tribes they are in, notice how even the ones in mature tribes seem to not be in any really mature tribe, just ones for language or something) I listed the number of tribes shown. So it is possible that they were asked not to show thier mature tribes. Also after the number of friends I listed the tribe employees that I recognized.
I'd like to know how people with no friends end up nominated for this and I also will look back and see what day the thing started and how many of the people on the list joined on or right around that time.

okay, so I have been kinda quiet lately...much doing in my life.

Last weekend I had a piece in a show (and helped set up the show) pix at http://www.recursiveirony.com/gallery/rigged (my piece is the statues of liberty one)

tons of client work for my art engineering business this summer

working on about 6 different people's projects for Burning Man

and, as always, this is all on top of day job, family, home, etc.

I'll be happier when the other stuff becomes my day job

Okay, what I need is an old dot matrix printer style font... specifically, a Commodore printer, circa 1982. Any ideas where to find such a thing?

Thanks!

Ok so I'm a total procrastenator (Yes, I know I spelled that wrong)! I have to write a research paper. It needs to be 6 to 8 pages in length. And it has to be related to the accounting field (my degree). My original idea was to write about "the difference between management accounting and finance accounting". My auidence would be people considering the field of management accounting. So obviously my stance is that management accounting is the prefered way to go.

My dilema:
I have come to the point where it's do or die and I cannot find anything on this subject past a few sentences on what these two things are. Which do not make a whole lot of sense to me anyway! I need help! I need to fill up 8 pages on this dry subject and I don't know what to do! I figured sense there are a bunch of smarties in here you guys might be able to offer me some good advice?? PLEASE!! :D

Thanks guys!

So over the past couple of weeks in my new studio, I've been able to delve into new (to me) graphic and animation applications:

Flash MX, Freehand, Fireworks, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, ToonBoom.

How fun is that, right!

It's interesting that each program has its own plusses and minuses, and not one of them have the complete functionality I'd like. I know, I know... how else could they charge the big bucks for the entire suites, right?

For many years, I've used PaintShopPro by Jasc Software. It's a great program! and relatively cheap, compared to the big guns out there. I like the interface and features a lot. A little light on the vector side, but definitely powerful on the raster end. It's still my fave to work with, but Flash MX is fast on its heels, as I can *finally* scan drawings, then trace them as vector images in Flash. WOO HOO! I've been looking for just this kinda thing.

We're all computer geeks of some kind, I guess. We dig music and vids and pictures and stuff. StrngVoice, of course, is the Queen of Photoshop! I was just wondering what your fave programs are and why.

Please forgive me, but I cannot bear to keep up on technical stuff these days as it makes me sad for all the things I want but cannot afford, so best not to know they exist.

Here's my dilemma: I have a blue & white G3 with 256 Mb RAM and OS 10.3.8 which has gotten unbearably slow quite recently, even if I only have one app running (which is very rare).

I'm wondering if just increasing the RAM will help much and, if so, where I can get some very cheap RAM.

Any other suggestions are very welcome, as being in tribe gets simply unbearable at times and that makes me very, very sad, though it's not so bad if I stick with Shiira, which won't allow me to view my Yahoo! webmail.

My husband and I will be going to the Star Wars Celebration in Indianapolis in two weeks. We were able to score press credentials, which makes us likely candidates to score a face-to-face with Mr. Lucas himself.

Now, I am in no way a Star Wars geek, but my beloved is...and I have to say that his unbridled joy is getting to be infectious.

For whatever the object of your geeky affection is, what pushed you over the line from fan to full-fledged geek? I'd have to say that I am a Friends and When Harry Met Sally geek, simply because I am always in the mood to watch either one. And I actually can kick anyone's ass at Friends trivia.

And I am quickly becoming a Q Dollhead geek as it is infecting my dreams.

So yesterday I took BART into San Francisco so I could spend 4 hours learning how to taxiderm a mouse. Yes, you heard right...mouse taxidermy. It was a blast. Yes, we used real mice. No we didn't kill them ourselves. Yes we had to use scalpels and snips and take their skin off and build a form for the inside, and use little beads for eyes, and sew them back up, etc. I was worried I'd not enjoy slicing open a rodent and all that, but while I didn't take any particular delight in it, I wasn't grossed out by it in the slightest.

The class was at Paxton Gate in the city - described by one customer as "Smith & Hawken on acid" http://www.paxtongate.com

And examples of the mice our instructor has done are at her site www.mouseangel.com

and some extra info from someone else here http://www.usfca.edu/foghorn/taxidermy.html

...and I'm a geek. A mac geek specifically. I come from a tradition of conversation, political discourse and commentary of pop culture, usually supplanted by diatribes settled by going to the dictionary or encyclopedia. All that has been supplanted by going to google to get all my answers. Then, if something ticks me off, I'll write it on my blog. I think Steve Jobs is the sexiest man alive and I wish I could live in Cupertino.

Yesterday I was hanging out with two 16 year old girls (my pseudo-goddaughter and her friend). Among other places, we ended up at an arcade type place. After playing the requisite minature golf and air hockey, the two of them went to do Dance Dance Revolution, which I had never seen before. They did about what I would do, pretty average to sucky. But there were these two guys waiting to get on the machine after the girls were done.

I had never seen the geeky boys turn into dance machine geeks before. It wasn't like they could actually dance, but they had memorized this game at a very high level. Just seemed like such a weird and wonderful combination.

what's your favorite right now? and some big favorites from the past?

I was HUGE with the baby gadgets. What could I get to keep track of the boys, take pictures of the boys organize, share, print, edit, photoshop the boys.

My computer has to be the all time favorite though. Especially combined with tribe and photoshop and IMs.

PDA was big for awhile. I love gadgets, I think of gadgets they should make and yet we are poor so I don't have too many.

When do you all find it most fun being a geek? When you're around others like yourselves, or when you're the 'lone geek' in the crowd? Depending on the situation, I like either one.

So...I just had a moment of Geekness I had to share...it's 2:48 am. Im studying for midterms tomorrow (a big thank you to all my professors who scheduled midterms the same freaking day....three of them) So my notebook knocks over my Captain Kirk action figure and I have to get under the desk to retrieve the fallen teeny phaser.

sigh. Yep. Geek.
